FAB 5 TORE UP "CELEBRATE BROOKLYN"
Jamaica’s
most versatile band, Fab 5, had a resounding standing ovation at
their Independence Weekend perform on the world famous "Celebrate Brooklyn" cultural series.
After a polished and very enjoyable set from New York based band Uzalo,
which had the large crowd rocking and set the mood for the afternoon
Fab 5 launched a musical attack on the citizens of Brooklyn which
offered no respite. Hit after hit and song after song had the
crowd rocking and shouting for more.
The ovation at the end of the concert was sustained
unabated for almost 4 minutes, forcing even the super disciplined
Park authorities to ask the band to perform for another 5 minutes
(beyond official lock-off time), an action previously unheard of in
the park.
The
crowd, mainly Brooklyn locals and mainly white, but with a fair
representation of persons of colour and including a sprinkling of
Caribbean nationals, enjoyed every minute of the wide-ranging
performance. The band played everything from Ska to dancehall,
including R&B and Soca and reminded those in the audience who were
Fab 5 fans of their many hits by reeling off a succession of songs
dating from 1970 to the mid 2000s. With their tremendous versatility in music and encyclopedic knowledge of Jamaican music and culture, the band
had the gathering 'eating out of their musical hands'.
It was Fab 5 at their
awesome best.
